Your Future Area of Assignment

The Competence Center for Biotechnology is the global point of contact for innovative biotechnological topics at Covestro. We use biotechnology to develop new processes and products.

During your approximately 6-month internship, you will undertake various activities in biotechnology with one of the three mentioned focus areas. In any case, this includes planning, conducting, evaluating, and documenting laboratory experiments, as well as presenting results.

Option 1: Enzyme Technology

In the field of enzyme technology, you will carry out enzyme reactions both on a small scale and under industrially relevant process conditions. Your work includes enzyme production, characterization, and optimization for industrial processes, supporting the team in the detailed assessment and optimization of process parameters. Conducting accompanying analytics is also part of your tasks.

Option 2: Strain Development

In strain development, you will use genetic engineering methods to optimize microbial production strains for the production of bio-based chemicals. You will use shake flask or micro-cultivation systems and corresponding analytics to evaluate different strains.

Option 3: Fermentation

In the field of fermentation, you will carry out cultivations of microbial production strains in shake flasks and laboratory bioreactors under industrial-like production conditions. This will support the team in the detailed assessment of production strains and the optimization of process parameters. Conducting accompanying analytics (e.g., HPLC) is also part of your tasks.

You will also undertake organizational and safety-related tasks in the laboratory. Your internship will be personally supervised by an expert in the team, with the entire team providing support and advice. Your work will contribute to strategic innovation projects aimed at achieving a circular economy. During your internship, you will get to know the innovative strength, culture, and general processes of our company.

What You Bring

You have at least completed a Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology/Biochemistry/Microbiology/Biology/Bioprocess Engineering. You are currently pursuing a Master's degree or preparing for further studies and now want to gain more practical experience. You are proficient in sterile work and familiar with handling microorganisms and their cultivation. For strain development, you are familiar with common molecular biology methods (PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning) and have initial practical experience in them. You are familiar with modern biotechnological methods (including cloning, cultivation of microorganisms, production and characterization of enzymes) and have initial practical experience. Ideally, you have initial knowledge of handling bioreactors. You have basic knowledge of analytical methods, e.g., HPLC/GC, spectrophotometry. You have good knowledge of MS Office. A structured way of working is a matter of course for you. Teamwork and strong communication skills characterize you. Safety and responsibility, as well as an active willingness to learn, complete your profile. Good English skills are an advantage.
