We are currently seeking an Intern (d/f/m) in Data Science & Applied AI in Insurance to join our AI Development team within the Life/Health Global Underwriting & R&D unit in Cologne. The internship can start immediately and is planned for a duration of six months. The position is full-time (38 hours per week).
Your Role
You will closely collaborate with our AI Development and Analytics team and gain hands‑on experience in Data Science and AI projects. These projects include both exploring and understanding data as well as learning how different models and methods are developed to solve real‑world problems. In this context, you will be involved in the following learning areas:
- Transforming and preparing data by loading, cleaning, identifying key features, generating autonomous summaries, and conducting exploratory data analysis (EDA).
- Creating interactive and dynamic visualizations to clearly communicate findings.
- Learning how reliable and reproducible data pipelines are built and maintained.
- Gaining experience with generative AI by helping to develop and implement use cases, applying prompt engineering, and learning how AI models can be fine‑tuned.
- Working with in‑code AI tools and agents to support data applications, automate processes, and improve workflows.
- Contributing to the development of (AI‑driven) functions and packages that help standardize and streamline analytical work.
You will also support the team in preparing and presenting results in different formats. Throughout your internship, you will gain valuable practical experience with real data and develop a deeper understanding of the fields of Advanced Analytics, AI, and Data Science.
Your Profile
- You are currently enrolled in an advanced bachelor's or master's degree program in mathematics, computer science, economics, finance, natural sciences, or a similar field of study.
- You have good knowledge of the programming language R. Experience with packages such as tidyverse, data.table, shiny, targets, ellmer, xgboost or similar is an advantage.
- You have a keen interest in learning new techniques and methods. Analytical thinking and the ability to find pragmatic solutions are among your strengths.
- Initial experience in data analysis and statistical methods - ideally going beyond linear regression - as well as programmatic use of AI models is beneficial.
- Experience with git, SQL, Quarto, bash or Python is an advantage.
- You are flexible, communicative, and enjoy working in a team.
- You have a very good command of English, as a large part of the work will be carried out in English.
