Head of Marketing & Communications
Intro
The Marketing & Communications team communicates the HateAid brand, its organizational issues, and political demands internally and externally, thereby shaping public debate on digital violence and disinformation. To secure the growth of our organization and increase our impact, we want to continuously expand and diversify our strategic communication and fundraising efforts. For this, we are looking for someone who is passionate about HateAid's values and goals and is eager to further develop the strategic direction of HateAid's entire communication, reorganize the team, and thus implement tailor-made communication for different channels and target groups.
We are a continuously evolving organization in a dynamic environment. You will have the opportunity to develop your area, identify fields of action, and implement them in direct coordination with management.
Your Future Roles
- You will be responsible for budget and resource planning as well as the strategic direction of your department, always keeping the organization's vision and goals in mind.
- You will be responsible for the strategic and cross-team communication strategy and planning, ensuring that relevant topics are effectively placed both internally and externally.
- You will guard and maintain our corporate identity, develop it further as needed, and ensure that it is communicated internally and externally.
- You will support editorial, campaigning, press, and the crisis team, among others, with your expertise, provide important strategic impulses, and develop communication angles.
- With your overarching perspective, you will be a sparring partner for strategic planning in small donation fundraising, including content marketing. With your communication expertise, you will support campaigns, mailings, and communicative challenges.
- Together with your team, agencies, and freelancers, you will conceptualize target-group-specific communication, marketing, and fundraising measures (offline and online communication, integrated campaigns, lead and donation campaigns, corporate and influencer collaborations).
- You will define the right KPIs to evaluate the effectiveness of all measures and derive further steps from them to continuously optimize activities.
- You will work closely with management and the other four team leads within the leadership team to make holistic decisions for the organization. In doing so, you will create the transfer between organizational goals and those of your team.
Leadership
- You will take on the professional and disciplinary leadership of approximately seven permanent employees and student assistants from the sub-areas of Communication & Content, Press, Brand Management, and Marketing/Small Donation Fundraising. The establishment of a new sub-area is currently planned, for which at least two more employees are to be hired.
- You will create a productive yet people-centered work environment, promote teamwork both within and across teams, provide assistance for self-organized work, conduct feedback and development discussions, take measures for team building, and support your employees with emerging tensions.
We Are Looking For
- Your place of residence and usual abode are in Germany.
- A degree or training in humanities, political science, journalism, PR, public relations, or other relevant fields can be helpful, but is not a prerequisite – personality and expertise are more important to us than formal qualifications.
- You have at least 7 years of professional experience in the required field, including personnel responsibility for medium to large teams.
- Expert status: Strategic communication, short copy, and social media platforms in general.
- In-depth understanding: Campaigns and long copy texts. You are also always up-to-date on political developments and world events and can assess which topics are relevant to our communication.
- Basic understanding: Brand / Corporate Identity, small donation fundraising, expertise on digital violence and disinformation.
- You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in German and can use them to present complex topics inclusively, concisely, simply, and target-group-specifically. Your English is also quite impressive.
- You have strong project and time management skills, never lose sight of the big picture despite many parallel topics with high information density, and can set up, develop, and implement processes. You are also familiar with process management tools.
- You are always aware of the latest digital trends/innovations and derive creative ideas from them to continuously increase our visibility and reach.
- You show initiative and proactivity in familiarizing yourself with new topics and tools, and enjoy testing new approaches and evaluating their success using relevant KPIs.
- You are empathetic but can also set boundaries and maintain a clear line. You enjoy making decisions, stand up for your convictions and ideas, and can critically question your viewpoints at the same time.
- You have a very high quality awareness but can distinguish excellence from perfectionism.
- Our vision is your passion: You are passionate about our topic, about what you do, and want to take targeted responsibility and ownership for your area.
- People management is not a side issue for you. You enjoy leading and retaining a diverse team both professionally and disciplinarily. You are also keen to actively participate in recruiting and expanding your team.
- You are familiar with using various digital tools for organization and communication and are proficient in using the MS Office suite.
- You appreciate our diverse society and have the will to develop yourself further in this regard, to change your perspective, and to learn.
You don't have to be an expert in all areas, but you know how to advance topics successfully through best practices and a network – meaning, even if not all requirements apply to you, we look forward to your application!

About Us
Hate in the digital space is a societal challenge. People who experience digital violence often stand alone. Usually, both their personal environment and the authorities are overwhelmed when people are massively attacked online. Platforms also rarely take responsibility. We want to change that – preferably with you by our side.
What HateAid Does
HateAid is a non-profit organization that has been committed to human rights in the digital space since 2018. All affected individuals who do not spread digital violence themselves can turn to HateAid for advice. In selected cases, we also support those affected in enforcing their legal claims.
We see digital violence as a major threat to democracy. Therefore, we want to sustainably improve the basic conditions for people experiencing digital violence, for example, through changes in criminal and civil law or consumer protection. To this end, we are in regular exchange with politicians, law enforcement agencies, and platform operators, and publish position papers and statements. Through campaigns, actions, and media work, we address the issue of digital violence to a broad public.
Diversity is important to us...
...and our organization is in a constant process of becoming a safe place for everyone – we still have a lot to learn and rethink in this regard. If this is as important to you as it is to us, we look forward to your application.
If you have decided against applying for a position for reasons that are neither professional nor content-related, feel free to let us know via jobs@hateaid.org what we can do differently/better.
