Master (w/m/d) in Biology, Geoecology, Environmental Sciences or similar with focus on Field Ecology

The State Institute for the Environment Baden-Württemberg (LUBW) in Karlsruhe, Department "Sustainability and Nature Conservation", has an opening for a higher service position. We are seeking a qualified individual with a Master's degree in Biology, Geoecology, Environmental Sciences, or a comparable field with a specialization in Field Ecology. This is a permanent, full-time position in the "Area Protection, Nature Conservation Services" division, available as soon as possible.

The LUBW serves as the competence center for the state of Baden-Württemberg in matters of environmental protection, nature conservation, technical occupational safety, radiation protection, and product safety, advising politics and administration on a wide range of technical issues.

A key responsibility of the "Area Protection, Nature Conservation Services" division is the documentation of protected biotopes and habitats and the execution of monitoring programs. One area of work involves organizing field mapping operations, including commissioning and providing technical support to field mappers, conducting training, and managing data quality. Additionally, the division develops conceptual frameworks for data collection, analyzes existing data to derive recommendations for action, and supports enforcement authorities in biotope protection and the implementation of the FFH Directive.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Coordinating various mapping and monitoring programs in area protection, including managing field operations and addressing technical questions (e.g., open land biotope mapping, ecosystem monitoring).
  • Conducting analyses and preparing results to identify areas requiring action.
  • Advancing data collection methods, potentially incorporating remote sensing data and AI-based approaches, and updating mapping guidelines.
  • Contributing to the implementation of other biotope and habitat protection objectives.
  • Providing technical support for the (further) development of software for nature conservation data collection and management.

Qualifications:

  • Successfully completed university studies (Diplom/Master's degree) in Biology, Geoecology, Environmental Sciences, each with a focus on Field Ecology, or a comparable field with a focus on Field Ecology. For Master's degrees not obtained at a university, accreditation for access to the higher service must be proven at the time of completion. Foreign degrees require a certificate evaluation from the Central Agency for Foreign Education.
  • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of vegetation science and flora, particularly for Baden-Württemberg.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in German, equivalent to at least C1 language level.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Sound knowledge of the definition and experience in delineating vegetation units, including biotope types and habitat types according to the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive, especially in open land.
  • Willingness to learn new IT applications.
  • Experience in organizing and executing complex projects.
  • Administrative or professional experience, as well as knowledge of relevant laws, directives, and procedures.
  • Proficiency in using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and in remote sensing data acquisition.
  • Ability to contextualize issues within a broader framework.
  • An engaged, structured, and independent work style.
  • A high degree of teamwork and strong communication skills.
  • Resilience, decisiveness, and strong assertiveness.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Remuneration according to pay group 13 TV-L.
  • An interesting and varied range of tasks.
  • Collaboration within a competent and dedicated team.
  • Diverse training and further education opportunities.
