Job Description

At our innovative department, we are developing current expertise in the field of electromobility components. Within the scope of our national and international industry and research projects, we impart excellent presentation skills alongside project management expertise. A hands-on mentality can be further developed in our two machine halls with state-of-the-art infrastructure through practical tasks.

True to our motto "PEM - Science for E-Mobility Production," we unite eight research groups in three areas. In these areas, we continuously advance the production processes for electric vehicles and their components (battery, electric motor, and fuel cell).

Research Group "Battery Engineering & Safety" (BES) The "Battery Engineering & Safety" research group at the PEM department contributes to the development of high-performance, safe, sustainable, and economical battery cells and systems for the future. From conducting strategic consulting projects to investigating specific technical issues—both constructively and in simulations, as well as operationally with laboratory prototypes—the team addresses nearly all topics related to battery cells and battery systems.

The Environment Our diverse and demanding subject areas enable close collaboration with leading executives and specialists from pioneering OEMs, automotive suppliers, mechanical and plant engineering firms, startups, and other renowned industry partners. The creative design of your tasks is an important component of your personal development, particularly evident in the elaboration of your doctoral research. Here, you can delve into a current trending topic, such as agile factory planning. Your doctorate will thus specifically complement your previous activities. The combination of methodical work with a holistic perspective and "deep technical dives" offers our employees a unique environment for personal and professional development. The RWTH offers a variety of health, counseling, and prevention services (e.g., university sports) as part of its University Health Management. For salaried employees and civil servants, there is a comprehensive range of further training opportunities and the option to purchase a job ticket. This job posting is open to all genders. We particularly aim to promote the careers of women at RWTH Aachen University and therefore welcome applications from women. Women will be given preferential consideration in cases of equal qualifications, skills, and professional performance, provided they are underrepresented in the organizational unit and unless reasons pertaining to an individual competitor outweigh this.

Your Responsibilities

  • You will play a decisive role in shaping projects with industry partners, from acquisition and planning to execution (e.g., electrode development, battery cell development, battery testing).
  • Within research projects, you will investigate exciting questions on the topic of "battery development and safety" as well as "innovative battery technologies and future product architectures."
  • Within research and industrial projects, you will research prototypes and new manufacturing and testing methods.
  • You will gain early budget and management responsibility and can shape topics independently.

Your Profile

  • You have successfully completed a technical degree (Master's or equivalent) in a technical field (e.g., Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemistry).
  • You possess in-depth technical understanding of lithium-ion battery cell technology and the specific design-relevant interdependencies between individual design and performance parameters.
  • You have at least 3 years of practical professional experience in production-related electrode and/or battery cell development for lithium-ion battery cell technology in an industrial or industrial-adjacent context.
  • Ideally, you have operational experience in validating battery cell concepts throughout the product maturity level up to the pre-series production.
  • Ideally, you have the ability to work confidently with MATLAB, COMSOL Multiphysics, and Siemens NX, or comparable tools.
  • You have the self-drive to develop new topics and utilize creative freedom.
  • You work in a structured and reliable manner, think creatively and pragmatically, are curious, and motivated to constantly learn new things.
  • You are willing to travel extensively and are flexible.
  • You speak and write German and English fluently.

We Offer You

  • 30 days of vacation for full-time employment & bridging day arrangement
  • Flexible working hours with flextime
  • Possibility of partial remote work (home office)
  • Events for all employees and team events
  • Annual special payment, provided eligibility requirements are met
  • Modern IT equipment

Employment will be as an employee. The position is to be filled as soon as possible and is limited to 3 years. The fixed-term employment is within the scope of the fixed-term possibilities of the German Act on Fixed-Term Scientific Contracts (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz). This is a full-time position. Remuneration will be in accordance with the TV-L collective agreement. The position is classified as EG 13 TV-L.
