About sPro - sustainable-projects

sPro - sustainable-projects is a consultancy specialized in the coordination of transnational projects, mostly funded by the European Commission. Our topical focus lies in projects dealing with the sustainable use of the sea. We run the permanent secretariat of the SUBMARINER Network for Blue Growth and act as coordinators of the EU Mission Ocean in the Baltic and North Sea. SUBMARINER is the cooperation platform for actors/initiatives across the Baltic Sea Region and beyond who promote innovative and sustainable uses of marine resources.

We have a long-term portfolio of over 30 large-scale projects and operate with an extensive network of trusted cooperation partners from all European countries, encompassing research, industry, business development, NGOs, and the public sector. We currently have 35 employees coming from a wide range of different academic backgrounds with more than 15 different nationalities.

The Maritime Spatial Planning/Marine Protected Areas/Multi-Use (3M) Team

The Maritime Spatial Planning/Marine Protected Areas/Multi-Use (3M) team currently manages SUBMARINER Network and s Pro's participation in 10 different EU-wide projects as well as service contracts, where we provide direct advice to national governments.

The Role

We are looking for a proactive and creative Communications Manager to lead the design and implementation of communication strategies across EU-funded projects related to marine sustainable planning and management, and marine biodiversity conservation. This is a unique opportunity to shape impactful storytelling, engagement, and dissemination in the important field of marine governance.

This position is a parental leave replacement which is limited to one year. Depending on the project volume, an extension is possible.

Your Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement communication strategies aligned with project goals, EU dissemination requirements, and stakeholder needs.
  • Manage all project communications channels, including websites, social media (LinkedIn, Instagram, possibly others), newsletters, and press releases.
  • Coordinate the production of policy briefs, project reports, infographics, videos, and other outreach materials.
  • Translate technical results into accessible content for diverse audiences, including policymakers, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Support and lead event communications, such as workshops, webinars, and final conferences.
  • Create and lead project related and cross-projects promotional campaigns, such as for the MPA Community Network.
  • Liaise with partners in charge of communications in the project, or partners communication teams to ensure consistent and strategic messaging.
  • Oversee compliance with the EU visibility rules and contribute to the project's dissemination and exploitation plan.
  • Monitor and evaluate communication impact using web and media analytics, adjusting the approaches to meeting the KPIs included in the projects proposals/communication strategy.
  • Support the 3M team in identifying and acquiring new projects that align with our strategic objectives.

Your Profile

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Communications, Environmental Policy, Marine Science, Journalism, or a related field.
  • At least 3+ years of experience in science, policy, or environmental communication - ideally in EU-funded projects.
  • Proven analytical and communication skills and ability to produce high-quality reports, briefs and policy recommendations.
  • Understanding of marine governance, MSP, biodiversity, and EU environmental policy frameworks will be considered as advantage.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills in English language. Proficiency in German and/or other languages of the Baltic Sea region is an advantage.
  • Proven ability in project and workshop organisation and management.
  • Exceptional teamwork and interpersonal abilities.
  • Good knowledge of MS Office and SharePoint.
  • Able to travel occasionally in Europe to co-host or participate in events.
  • Proficiency in tools like WordPress, Mailchimp, Canva, Adobe Suite, and social media management platforms such as Hootsuite.
  • Ability to work across disciplines and cultures, managing multiple partners and tight deadlines.
  • Desirable: Familiarity with graphic design, audio-visual production, or data visualization is a strong asset.

What We Offer

  • A meaningful job in a very dynamically evolving environment, where you contribute to climate change mitigation, reduction of pollution and biodiversity loss at EU and global level.
  • Individual career development; including targeted training activities.
  • A beautiful office in the middle of Berlin.
  • Up to three home office days per week; flexible working hours and holiday regulations (Hybrid work model).
  • Regular overall team retreats to promote internal knowledge transfer, generate shared ideas and strengthen the working atmosphere.
  • Participation in project meetings / conferences in interesting places across Europe.
  • Annual salary range of 45,000 € to 54,000 €, depending on relevant experience.
