The Role
As a Data Engineer, you will build and operate the data foundations that enable analytics, ML, and GenAI use cases across the organisation.
Responsibilities
You will:
- Design, build, and operate data pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Microsoft Fabric, and/or Databricks
- Integrate and transform data from internal systems and external sources using ETL/ELT and CDC patterns
- Develop and support SQL and NoSQL databases, including exposure to vector and graph databases for AI use cases
- Contribute to the development and operation of a central Azure-based data & AI platform
- Work closely with data scientists and business teams to operationalise AI workflows and move use cases into production
- Implement data quality, governance, and security standards (e.g. lineage, access control, policies)
- Support CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, and modern DevOps practices within the data platform
- Influence architectural decisions within the Azure data and AI landscape
- Document pipelines, data models, and platform components clearly and sustainably
The Candidate
You are a hands-on data engineer with strong Azure experience and an interest in working closer to AI.
Requirements
You bring:
- Strong hands-on experience with Azure data services (e.g. Data Factory, Fabric, Databricks, Synapse)
- Very good SQL skills and experience with NoSQL data stores
- Experience building and operating production-grade data pipelines
- Familiarity with APIs and interfaces (REST, ODBC/JDBC)
- Experience with CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, and containerisation is a strong plus
- A strong focus on data quality, reliability, and scalability
- Fluent German (C1 ) and good English

The company is a profitable, family-owned German Mittelstand organisation with ~€1B annual revenue, operations in 80 countries, and a long-standing reputation for combining industrial hardware with advanced software and digital platforms. Data and AI play a central role in enabling predictive maintenance, digital twins, and operational efficiency across manufacturing and energy customers worldwide.
This role sits in a central AI CoE, responsible for building and scaling enterprise-wide data and AI platforms. It's a hands-on data engineering position with strong exposure to analytics, machine learning, and GenAI, and clear long-term progression into technical leadership.

Detmold (2 days per week)
Salary
€80--90k fixed, depending on experience.
