About BAFA
The Bundesamt für Wirtschaft und Ausfuhrkontrolle (BAFA) is the federal government's competence center for foreign trade, economic development, energy, supply chains, and auditor oversight. BAFA operates from its headquarters in Eschborn, near Frankfurt am Main, and has branch offices in Weißwasser/Saxony, Borna/Saxony, and Berlin.
Your Role
Are you interested in working at the intersection of technology and German foreign and security policy? In the field of technical export control, we offer exciting and responsible tasks with long-term prospects and opportunities for professional development.
As the central licensing authority, BAFA implements the security concerns and foreign policy interests of the Federal Republic of Germany in the area of foreign trade law, in line with the political guidelines of the federal government. The goal is to prevent threats to Germany or its allies through conventional weapons and weapons of mass destruction. In Division 3 -- Export Technology, Technical Statements, International Regime Technology -- we work with other partner states in international bodies to define the goods, software, and technologies subject to export controls. Nationally, we are responsible for the technical assessment of goods, software, and technologies in the context of export projects. Our technical assessments form the basis for export control decisions.
Your responsibilities in Department 312 "Weapon Systems, Air and Land Vehicles, Ships, Missile and Space Systems (MTCR)" or Department 313 "Machine Tools, Measuring Machines, Industrial Equipment" include:
- Independently preparing technical statements and expert opinions on goods.
- Supporting national/international export control listing of goods through your technical expertise.
- Writing technical expert opinions for federal ministries and other authorities.
Our Requirements
- A completed university degree (Diplom-FH or Bachelor's) in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a comparable technical field.
- A fundamental interest in the aforementioned tasks is expected.
- Several years of professional experience and good knowledge of English (at least comparable to B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages -- CEFR) are desirable.
- Willingness to undertake one- to multi-day business trips domestically and abroad, as required.
- Ability to analyze and assess complex technical issues.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Enthusiasm, resilience, and decisiveness.
- Strong communication skills.
- Willingness to learn and flexibility.
- Consent to undergo a security check in accordance with the Federal Security Screening Act (Sicherheitsüberprüfungsgesetz -- SÜG) is a prerequisite for employment.
What We Offer

Remuneration is in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD) under pay grade 11 TV EntgO Bund.
Employment is offered as soon as possible on a permanent basis.
Subject to the relevant requirements, former temporary public employees may be considered for permanent civil servant positions later.
We can consider candidates currently in civil servant roles for positions up to salary group A 11, depending on available positions.
We will discuss individual employment conditions with you during the interview. Family-friendly modified working hours or part-time positions are generally possible.
