AI Engineering Lead -- Production AI & Agentic Systems

I'm partnering with a fast-growing LegalTech company whose AI-powered platform is already used by hundreds of customers.
They are now hiring an AI Engineering Lead to become the most senior AI specialist in the business and shape how production AI is designed, built and implemented across the organisation.
This is not a pure research position, a prompt-engineering role or an opportunity to spend months experimenting without shipping.
The successful person will have already built and deployed sophisticated AI products in production, led engineers doing the same and established strong engineering practices around reliability, evaluation and observability.
The expected balance is approximately 60% technical leadership and 40% hands-on engineering.
What You'll Be Doing
• Owning and evolving the company's AI engineering roadmap
• Leading the technical direction of AI-driven product features
• Managing, mentoring and developing a growing AI engineering team
• Remaining hands-on with the design and delivery of production AI systems
• Building and scaling agentic workflows, RAG pipelines and retrieval systems
• Improving embedding, ranking and information-retrieval capabilities
• Establishing best practices around AI evaluations, observability and reliability
• Working closely with the Head of Engineering and wider product organisation
• Leading cross-functional AI enablement initiatives across the business
• Helping engineering teams adopt AI tools and practices effectively
• Influencing technical culture, architecture and product direction
What We're Looking For
• Strong experience building and deploying AI-powered products in production
• Proven leadership of AI, machine learning or applied AI engineers
• Hands-on experience with agentic systems and tool-using LLM applications
• Production experience with RAG, embeddings, ranking and retrieval pipelines
• Strong knowledge of AI evaluation, monitoring and observability
• Experience defining engineering standards and technical best practices
• The ability to move between strategic leadership and hands-on delivery
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and production ownership
• Experience working in a fast-moving product-led environment
• A pragmatic, commercially minded approach to applying AI
• The confidence to challenge assumptions and make difficult technical decisions
