Job Description

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest universities in Germany. Thanks to its location in the Rhine-Main science region, the university can unfold to its full potential and showcase its innovative power and dynamism. Faculty 09 - Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Geography and Geosciences is one of the largest and most diverse faculties at JGU, with approximately 3,400 students, more than 50 professors, and about 380 academic staff members as well as approximately 160 administrative and technical staff members. The Deputy Managing Director plays a central role and serves as an interface between the institutes, the university administration, and in communication with external institutions.

Your Tasks

  • Proportional and appropriate coordination of the Faculty's day-to-day operations, particularly with regard to ongoing and future appointment processes
  • Conceptual tasks, primarily at the interface between academia and administration ("Third Space")
  • Coordinating the further development of the Faculty's internationalization strategy, with a particular focus on expanding the range of international degree programs and related advisory services
  • Responsibility for the further development of the quality of studies and teaching
  • Management of the Internationalization Office and the Counseling Office, including personnel management of currently 4 staff members
  • Management and coordination of public relations activities within the Faculty
  • Coordination of gender equality efforts within the Faculty
  • Appropriate participation in university teaching
  • Opportunity to conduct research activities within the scope of the remaining time budget

Your Profile

  • PhD or equivalent
  • Successfully completed graduate degree in one of the subjects of Faculty 09
  • Successfully completed doctoral degree in one of the subjects in Faculty 09
  • Generally, following successful completion of a university degree, full-time professional experience of at least two years and six months
  • Several years of relevant professional experience in the field of academic administration at a German university
  • Ability to help shape digital transformation in administration
  • Very good knowledge of German and very good knowledge of English
  • Very good knowledge:
    • of the structures and organizational forms of Johannes Gutenberg University
    • of the structures of the Faculty and all institutions belonging to the Faculty
    • of academic self-governance
    • of higher education law
    • in labor law
    • gender equality law
    • in the field of research management
  • Good knowledge:
    • of the Faculty's degree programs and the corresponding examination regulations
    • in the field of press and public relations
    • in the field of project and process management, including the application for and management of project funds
  • of personnel management
  • Additionally desirable:
    • teamwork, communication, and organizational skills, a structured approach to work
    • Knowledge of communication and presentation techniques
    • Proficiency in standard Office programs as well as JGU's internal digital applications (Valucon, Jobrouter, Hidden Professionals, MACH)

In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in § 57 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.
