Our Department: Moving Picture Technologies

Our department develops next-generation video codecs designed for reliable, low-latency video streaming, even under challenging network conditions like unstable mobile connections. We are dedicated to making video compression more robust, efficient, and practical for implementation, ensuring seamless streaming across various environments. Building on Fraunhofer IIS's global success in audio coding—now utilized in over 10 billion devices—we merge innovative research with standardization and real-world application. Our objective is to extend this expertise to video coding, creating technologies that support the future of interactive and robust video applications.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Algorithm Design: Develop innovative compression algorithms and implement them as efficient software.
  • Technology Benchmarking: Evaluate and compare our approaches against competing methods.
  • Innovation & Team Collaboration: Contribute your ideas and collaborate with the team to foster innovative solutions.
  • Software Quality Assurance: Ensure high software quality throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Documentation: Document and communicate evaluation results and insights.

What You Bring:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Electrical Engineering, Multimedia Technology, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of signal processing.
  • An excellent understanding of video codecs, including HEVC and/or VVC.
  • Hands-on project experience (minimum 3 months) in designing or improving an image or video codec.
  • Practical programming experience in C.

This position is initially limited to 2 years, with the possibility of extension. The standard workweek is 39 hours. Part-time employment is possible, ideally close to full-time.
