The Department of Transformation of Economic and Social Systems is seeking a Doctoral Researcher (m/f/diverse) - Position No. 2026-B-01.

Position Details:

  • Employment Type: Part-time (65%, 25.4 hours/week)
  • Salary: German public sector tariff, EG13 TVoeD Bund, €40,800 - €58,500 gross annually (pro-rated for 65%)
  • Duration: Fixed term until December 31, 2029
  • Location: Bonn, Germany

Project Context: This position is part of the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center CRC-TRR 228 ("Future Rural Africa: Future-making and social-ecological transformation"), specifically the subproject 'Science Futures' at IDOS and the Institute for Sociology, University of Bonn. The CRC investigates social-ecological transformation and future-making in Africa, with 'Science Futures' focusing on science-policy interfaces (SPIs) in Kenya and Tanzania.

PhD Research Focus: The research will examine science-based policy advice, transfer, and dialogue between researchers and decision-makers in rural development contexts. The PhD project will specifically analyze the role of international organizations, NGOs, and international research institutions in advisory processes to the governments of Kenya and Tanzania. Supervision will be provided by Prof. Dr. Anna-Katharina Hornidge at IDOS and the University of Bonn.

IDOS Dual PhD Programme: IDOS offers a semi-structured PhD program combining research and policy advice, featuring group mentoring, peer mentoring, and one-on-one supervision. At least 50% of the working time is dedicated to dissertation work.

Application Requirements:

  • Master's degree in a relevant social science field (e.g., Human Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Area Studies, Science & Technology Studies).
  • Proven experience with social science research methodologies, especially qualitative and ethnographic methods.
  • Strong motivation for PhD studies.
  • Research or work experience in Africa is advantageous.
  • Eagerness to work in an interdisciplinary, globally dispersed team.
  • Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Fluent English; good command of Swahili or German is a plus.
  • Willingness and aptitude for international travel ("Tropical suitability required").
  • For foreign degrees, an Anabin database excerpt proving recognition is required.

Your Tasks:

  1. Develop an individual PhD research agenda within the 'International Organizations as Brokers of Change' work package.
  2. Conduct fieldwork in Kenya and Tanzania.
  3. Collaborate closely within the 'Science Futures' project and with international project partners.
  4. Participate in the IDOS dual PhD program and contribute to the institute.
