About Grafana Labs
Grafana Labs is a remote-first, open-source powerhouse with over 20 million users of its open-source visualization tool, Grafana. The company also supports over 3,000 companies with its Grafana LGTM Stack for observability, which can be run via Grafana Cloud or Grafana Enterprise Stack. Grafana Labs is scaling fast, maintaining its open-source legacy, global collaborative culture, and passion for meaningful work. The team thrives in an innovation-driven environment that values transparency, autonomy, and trust.
The Opportunity
Grafana Observability provides end-to-end observability across applications, infrastructure, databases, browsers, and mobile devices. The Mobile Observability initiative focuses on delivering high-performance, low-overhead SDKs for mobile developers, integrating with OpenTelemetry and Grafana Cloud to capture traces, metrics, logs, crashes, and user sessions for full-stack visibility.
What You'll Be Doing
- Developing and enhancing mobile instrumentation SDKs for iOS (Swift/Obj-C) and Android (Kotlin/Java), focusing on performance, stability, and developer experience.
- Implementing SDK features such as session tracking, crash reporting, sampling strategies, automatic context propagation, and OpenTelemetry integrations.
- Taking ownership of projects from conception to completion.
- Breaking down complex problems into manageable, incremental deliverables, designing modular solutions, and iterating based on feedback.
- Ensuring software quality through automated testing, CI processes, comprehensive documentation, and backward-compatible upgrades.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams (backend, frontend, product, solutions engineering) to ensure cohesive observability workflows.
- Engaging with the open-source community by reviewing pull requests, participating in design discussions, and guiding external contributors.
- Mentoring team members, contributing to technical design discussions, and influencing the mobile observability roadmap.
- Leveraging AI coding assistants with company-funded budgets for faster development cycles, including prototyping, test generation, refactoring, documentation, and incident response, all while maintaining strong code review and quality standards. Access to frontier models like GPT-Codex, Claude Opus, and Gemini Pro is provided.
What Makes You a Great Fit
- A motivated self-starter with a proactive approach and the ability to manage ambiguous scopes autonomously yet collaboratively.
- Strong mobile engineering experience in either iOS (Swift/Obj-C) or Android (Kotlin/Java), or both.
- Proven experience in building or maintaining mobile SDKs, platform libraries, or other developer-facing platform code for external developers.
- Experience with performance-sensitive code (startup time, memory, network efficiency) and making pragmatic trade-offs.
- Familiarity with OpenTelemetry (instrumentation, SDKs, collectors) or experience with similar telemetry libraries.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable working in a fully remote, globally distributed team.
- Coachability, customer focus, and a passion for developer experience, demonstrated through documentation, mentoring, and roadmap contributions.
- Pragmatism and comfort with ambiguity, prioritizing progress and iterative development.
Bonus Points For
- Contributions to OpenTelemetry, crash reporting libraries, or other observability open-source projects.
- Experience with cross-platform frameworks (React Native, Flutter) or building native bindings/bridges.
- Experience with mobile security, privacy, or platform integration challenges.
- Prior work on crash aggregation, session replay, or sampling for mobile telemetry.
