Staff Engineer (m/f/d)
Peter Park System GmbH is seeking a Staff Engineer (m/f/d) to join their Office of the CTO (OCTO). This is a unique opportunity to bootstrap new product lines, unblock critical projects, and tackle high-impact technical debt. You will report directly to the CTO and operate with significant autonomy.
About the Role
This is not a traditional Staff Engineer position. You will be instrumental in:
Bootstrapping New Bets from Zero to One
- Act as the founding technical lead for net-new initiatives.
- Translate strategic vision into technical architecture.
- Build the first working version and hand it off to a dedicated team.
- Own the entire early-stage lifecycle from proof-of-concept to production-ready MVP.
Unblocking Mission-Critical Projects
- Embed short-term in at-risk teams to diagnose issues and drive execution.
- Stabilize situations and leave teams stronger.
Tackling High-Impact Opportunistic Work
- Address cross-functional technical debt, customer escalations, and internal tooling improvements during downtime.
Building & Leading Small Teams (When Needed)
- Hire and manage small teams (1-3 engineers) for scaling initiatives.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership, mentorship, and delegation.
Operating with Radical Autonomy
- Meet weekly with the CTO for agenda-driven sessions.
- Own priorities, execution, and impact with minimal oversight.
- Proactively identify needs and align with stakeholders.
Translating Technical Decisions into Business Outcomes
- Articulate the business impact (ARR, margin, velocity) of your work.
- Write clear RFCs and communicate trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
Requirements
- Proven Zero-to-One Track Record: Experience building and shipping systems from scratch.
- High-Pressure Technical Leadership: Experience as the senior engineer during technical crises.
- Backend-Heavy or Full-Stack Depth: Strong backend skills (Python, Node.js/NestJS, TypeScript) with experience in distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and AWS. Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), CI/CD (GitLab), and container orchestration (Kubernetes).
- First-Principles Thinking: Ability to understand system design and when to deviate from norms.
- Entrepreneurial Ownership & Self-Direction: Founder mentality, focus on business impact, and ability to prioritize and execute with minimal oversight. Understanding of Peter Park's strategic pillars.
- Communication Without Gatekeeping: Clear technical writing (RFCs, documentation) and ability to explain complex topics to diverse audiences. Mentorship and openness to feedback.
- Cultural Fit: Alignment with Peter Park values (performance, fairness, transparency).
- Excellent English communication (C1+). German proficiency is a plus.
