Company Description:
Our client is a fast-growing international medical cannabis company based in Portugal. Founded more than five years ago, the company operates a GMP-certified manufacturing facility, which means it is licensed to produce medical-grade pharmaceutical products. The company operates as a Contract Manufacturing Organisation (CMO) for global pharmaceutical clients, producing products on their behalf, while also manufacturing and selling its own branded products. The company has steadily grown over the past five years to become a well-established player in the medical cannabis space.
With over 60 employees and ambitious growth plans, the company is now looking to strengthen its international commercial team. They already have more than 25 SKUs on the market which are currently sold to Germany and the UK and, as one of only a small number of producers, also has products that are licensed for sale in the Portuguese market. The company is now planning to grow its presence in Germany and is seeking a Business Development Manager to support and expand its sales activities in the German market.
The company has been active in the German market for approximately three years and currently works with a small number of established distribution partners. With a growing product portfolio and strong foundations already in place, they are now focused on expanding their commercial presence and sales volumes in Germany.
Role Description:
As Business Development Manager, you will be responsible for managing and growing the company's sales in the German market. Your main focus will be to grow the business by identifying and onboarding new distributors across Germany, while also taking ownership of the 2-3 existing distributor relationships. This role is focused on working with distributors rather than selling directly to pharmacies. Alongside selling the company's own branded medical cannabis products, you will also support business development opportunities related to contract manufacturing services, where relevant.
This will be the first commercial hire based in, and dedicated to, the German market. You will report directly into the commercial team based in Portugal, while working independently and remotely within Germany.
Responsibilities:
- Drive sales growth in Germany by increasing volumes through distributor-led sales
- Manage and develop relationships with existing German distribution partners
- Identify, approach, and onboard new distributors to expand coverage across Germany
- Actively generate new business opportunities through outreach, meetings, and ongoing relationship building
- Attend occasional in-person meetings with distributors and partners across Germany as required
- Analyse the German market, including pricing, buying behaviour, and distributor structures, to inform sales strategy
- Serve as the primary commercial contact for external partners in the German market
- Collaborate closely with the Portugal-based commercial team on sales strategy, pricing decisions, and product availability
- Support commercial discussions related to contract manufacturing and white-label services where relevant
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
- 2--3+ years of experience in sales, business development, or account management
- Must have a background in medical cannabis, pharmaceuticals, FMCG, or other consumer markets
- Strong sales-driven mindset with proven ability to generate and grow new business
- Experience working with distributors, wholesalers, or B2B partners
- Fluent German and English
- Bonus points for experience in the medical cannabis market
In return, our client is offering:
- Salary Range: €60.000 - €70.000
