Junior Legal Counsel - München

Markel Corporation is seeking a motivated and ambitious Junior Legal Counsel for a full-time internship position in Munich. The Legal Department supports all corporate, regulatory, product-related, and strategic initiatives for Markel Insurance SE across Europe.

Your Role

You will work closely with the Managing Counsel and international legal teams, contributing to the legal infrastructure, internal governance, and business development of Markel Insurance SE.

Corporate & Regulatory (Insurance)

  • Support the Managing Counsel in legal matters across EU jurisdictions.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate various contracts, including insurance cooperation agreements, service provider agreements, NDAs, brokerage and delegated authority agreements, and corporate documents.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on insurance regulatory law (VAG, IDD, MaGo, Solvency II, DORA, BaFin-Guidance).
  • Assist with BaFin filings, corporate secretarial governance, board-level documentation, and reporting.
  • Prepare board minutes, circular resolutions, and support management governance processes.

Commercial & Product-Related

  • Support the development, review, and maintenance of product documentation and templates.
  • Analyze German and EU insurance regulations impacting product wording and operational processes.
  • Collaborate with underwriting, compliance, operations, and finance teams on legal matters.

Operational Legal Support

  • Draft and update internal guidelines, templates, playbooks, process descriptions, and checklists.
  • Support internal projects such as digitalization, governance enhancements, policy updates, and quality management.
  • Participate in cross-functional project teams across Germany, Netherlands, Spain, France, and the UK.

Independent Work & Initiative

  • Take ownership of your workstreams and manage your time effectively.
  • Proactively identify risks, propose solutions, and drive topics to completion.
  • Provide well-structured, concise, and high-quality legal analyses and recommendations.

Your Profile

  • Successfully completed 1st State Law Exam in Germany.
  • Excellent written and spoken German and English skills.
  • Prior experience in insurance, corporate, commercial, or regulatory law (e.g., internships, legal traineeship, part-time jobs, law firm, in-house, MGA, InsurTech).
  • Skilled problem-solver with a pragmatic approach.
  • Strong analytical skills and a precise working style.
  • Ability to thrive in a growing, international, and performance-based environment.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Motivated to grow into a full Legal Counsel role within an international insurance group.
