VP Engineering - Payments

The opportunity:
We're partnering with the founders of a fast-growing fintech scale-up that has reached an exciting inflection point. The product has strong traction, ambitious growth plans, and a roadmap that now demands more complex, sophisticated technology. The next phase is about developing our in-house development capabilities further, by building a world-class engineering function, and creating the foundations for long-term scale. This is where you come in.
We're looking for a commercially minded, growth-focused VP of Engineering to take full ownership of technology; someone who can design the future state, build and lead a high-performing team, and act as a true partner to the founders as the business scales.
What you'll be responsible for:
- Technology & product leadership, ownership of the technical vision and architecture as the product evolves into more complex solutions
- Ensure the platform is scalable, secure, and fit for future growth
- Work closely with founders and product leadership to translate commercial goals into technical execution
- Make high-quality, pragmatic decisions the founders can trust
- Team build out, supporting our transition to a best in class in-house engineering model
- Attract, hire, and retain exceptional engineers (Python / React and beyond)
- Build a strong engineering culture with high standards and clear ownership, and introduce sensible processes, tooling, and best practices without slowing momentum
- Act as a senior leader and "owner" within the business
- Balance short-term delivery with long-term technical strategy
- Provide mentorship, guidance, and clarity to the engineering team
- Share experience and insight from previous growth journeys to help avoid common scale-up pitfalls
What we're looking for:
- Experience working in a start-up or scale-up environment, ideally within fin-tech or complex, product-led businesses
- Technical excellence, modern engineering culture, and high-performance delivery.
- Strong product-engineering integration, scalability experience, and exposure to modern platform architectures operating at significant transaction volume.
- Proven ability to attract, hire, build, scale, and lead engineering teams
- Strong technical background with deep understanding of modern web architectures
- Experience working in fintech or similarly high-trust environments where reliability, compliance, and risk matter
- Experience with Python and React.js environments required, you must be an AI native engineer who uses AI daily to design, write, review & ship code
- Able to understand and review all code being written, even if not hands-on day-to-day
- Commercially aware, understands how technology choices impact growth, revenue, and risk
- Trusted decision-maker with a calm, pragmatic approach
- Growth mindset who is excited by scale, complexity, and building for the future
