About Shopware

Shopware is a leading e-commerce system that enables companies worldwide to scale quickly and efficiently in digital commerce. As a forward-looking open-source solution, Shopware is already used by some of Europe's largest brands, retailers, and manufacturers in the B2C and B2B sectors.

The Checkout & Payments area spans multiple product areas, engineering teams, external providers, and regulatory and compliance requirements. The domain is highly interconnected, revenue-critical, and characterized by numerous dependencies -- making it ideal for dedicated program-level responsibility. The initial focus of this role is on Checkout & Payments, with the potential for priorities to evolve based on company objectives. If you are passionate about creating reliable and scalable checkout and payment experiences and enjoy orchestrating complex systems, teams, and partners at the heart of commercial success, then this role is for you.

As a Technical Program Manager – Checkout & Payments (m/f/d), you will lead cross-functional programs at the core of Shopware's commercial transaction flow. You will connect Engineering, Product, QA, Platform teams, as well as external partners, to ensure reliable and predictable execution of initiatives that directly impact revenue, conversion, and customer trust. Your mission is to ensure that Shopware's checkout and payment experiences are scalable, compliant, and resilient -- while empowering teams to implement complex changes with clarity and confidence.

This position can be based on-site, hybrid, or fully remote within Germany or in specific European countries where we are registered. Your work location will be agreed upon in advance and will form the basis of your employment contract.

Your Responsibilities:

  • You will take responsibility for complex, cross-functional, technical programs at the core of Shopware's commercial transaction flow. The role operates at the program level and encompasses multiple teams, product areas, and external partners.

  • As the central coordination point for Checkout & Payments initiatives, you will align product strategy, engineering execution, QA, platform capabilities, and third-party providers, ensuring predictable, high-quality deliveries in a revenue-critical environment.

  • You will hold end-to-end responsibility for technical programs related to checkout, orders, payments, shipping, tax, and related commercial functions -- including delivery outcomes, risk management, and execution quality.

  • You will translate strategic business and product goals into structured execution plans, clear milestones, and reliable timelines, ensuring alignment across teams with competing priorities.

  • You will proactively identify, manage, and resolve cross-team and cross-domain dependencies, technical risks, and delivery bottlenecks before they impact customers, partners, or revenue.

  • You will moderate and lead alignment forums, planning sessions, and retrospectives at the program level, enabling informed decisions, transparent trade-offs, and shared ownership at the senior level.

  • You will coordinate initiatives with internal teams and external vendors (e.g., payment providers, logistics partners, compliance stakeholders), ensuring clear responsibilities and smooth collaboration.

  • You will ensure that implementation consistently meets requirements for scalability, performance, security, compliance, and long-term maintainability -- especially in areas directly affecting conversion, trust, and payment flows.

  • You will establish and further develop repeatable delivery frameworks, reporting structures, and lean coordination processes that scale with increasing organizational complexity.

  • You will provide transparent, concise program reporting to Engineering and Product leadership, clearly highlighting risks, progress, and decision needs.

What you bring to the table:

  • You have at least 7 years of experience in technical program or project management or a comparable, experienced, cross-functional delivery role in complex product or platform organizations within the tech industry.

  • You possess high technical competence and work confidently with engineering teams on topics such as distributed systems, APIs, integrations, and modern software delivery practices.

  • You have a proven track record of successfully leading large, dependency-rich initiatives involving multiple teams, products, and external stakeholders.

  • You are familiar with revenue-critical or compliance-sensitive domains and understand the impact of delivery quality on customer trust and business success.

  • Stakeholder management at all levels, including senior engineering, product, and business leadership, is one of your strengths, even in ambiguous or highly dynamic situations.

  • You work in a highly structured and results-oriented manner and take clear responsibility for delivery, risks, and execution quality.

  • You communicate clearly, precisely, and empathetically, especially when discussing trade-offs, constraints, or conflicting priorities.

  • You have very good English skills and use them naturally in your daily work (German is not a requirement).

  • Bonus points for experience with e-commerce platforms, checkout or payment systems, third-party integrations, or open-source ecosystems, as well as for leading initiatives focused on security, compliance, or performance-critical systems.

What we offer you:

  • Company Culture: Open culture, flat hierarchies, initiative is encouraged.

  • Employment Contracts: Permanent positions offer long-term security.

  • Flexibility: Flexible working hours and options for mobile working and full-remote contracts.

  • Equipment: Free choice of work hardware.

  • Onboarding: Well-structured onboarding with support from a personal "buddy."

  • Work Environment: Inspiring environment with dedicated colleagues and a dynamic community.

  • Development Opportunities: Diverse opportunities for personal growth and development.

  • Additional Benefits: Attractive benefits such as company pension plan, health programs, and regular team events.
