Engineer (m/f/i) - Wire & Cable

The Engineer (m/f/i) - Wire & Cable will manage projects related to New Work Certification, Performance Testing, and Follow-Up Services for Engineered Materials, with a primary focus on the wire and cable industry. This position involves frequent customer interaction via email, Microsoft Teams, and phone, requiring strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

The candidate must work independently, prioritize projects based on customer timelines, and support the sales team in preparing quotes. Additional responsibilities include resolving non-conformances identified during follow-up sample testing under UL's mark integrity program and contributing to special projects that support technical and professional development.

Location: Carugate (Milan) / Italy

Work arrangement: hybrid ( 3 days office / 2 days home office)

Project Management and Client Interaction

  • Determines project scope, develops a preliminary plan of investigation, and determines project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction.
  • Projects may include travel to conduct or witness tests at client sites.
  • Initiates communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services.
  • Follows up on contacts from clients.
  • Communicates with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements.
  • Acts to address client concerns and to resolve client issues.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Provides technical assistance to clients in reference to product inspection and follow-up services.
  • Establishes appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer's information, examining samples, and applying UL requirements.
  • Is familiar with applicable standards, company manuals and appropriate technical literature.
  • Examines samples for compliance with UL requirements and notifies client of any areas in which the product is not in compliance or of any changes in project scope or specifications.
  • Resolves engineering issues associated with Variation Notices by analyzing and reporting on the acceptability of the variations.
  • Assists in the development of UL requirements.
  • Assists in developing special test methods and test equipment.
  • Analyzes test program for adequacy and sequence.
  • May coordinate and/or perform File Reviews, as directed.

Laboratory and Administrative Coordination

  • Coordinates laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians, scheduling and reviewing work of laboratory technicians and engineering assistants and establishing completion dates.
  • Coordinates administrative aspects of project management.
  • May serve as Project Handler of record and/or Reviewer of record as assigned.

Communication and Reporting

  • Communicates project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports.
  • Prepares Follow-Up Service Procedures and information pages.

Continuous Improvement and Representation

  • Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
  • May represent UL at industry related functions such as seminars and trade shows.

Compliance and Conduct

  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in Electrical & Electronics or Materials Engineering or related field.
  • Any relevant work experience in Wire & Cable field is considered a plus.
  • Any relevant work experience in CPR scheme is considered a plus.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Familiarity with UL, IEC, and other international standards for Wire & Cables is preferred.
  • Fluent in English with the ability to write technical reports.
  • Good Knowledge of German or other language is a plus.
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Team player with a proactive approach.
