Staff Data Engineer | Shape the Data Platform Behind a Leading B2C company
Do you want to define the technical direction of a data platform used across an entire business?
As a Staff Data Engineer , you'll be the most senior individual contributor within a high-performing Data Engineering team, building the infrastructure that powers analytics, machine learning, and product decisions across one of Europe's leading B2C technology platforms, used by millions of customers every year.
You'll stay hands-on while influencing architecture, mentoring engineers, and shaping the future of the company's data platform from ingestion through to analytics-ready datasets.
What You'll Do:
🏗 Own the Data Platform -- Shape the architecture behind the company's end-to-end data platform, from ingestion across dozens of sources through to reliable, analytics-ready datasets.
⚡ Build at Scale -- Design, build and operate robust batch and streaming pipelines that power decision-making across the business using a modern cloud-based stack.
🧠 Set the Technical Direction -- Define engineering standards, best practices and long-term platform strategy, helping the entire organisation build better data products.
🤝 Multiply Team Impact -- Mentor experienced engineers, raise the technical bar through reviews and coaching, and help grow a world-class Data Engineering function.
💰 Optimise for Performance & Cost -- Own architectural decisions that balance scalability, reliability and performance while keeping infrastructure efficient and cost-effective.
🤖 Champion Modern Engineering -- Leverage AI-assisted development and modern DataOps practices to continually improve developer productivity and platform quality.
The Team
You'll join a close-knit Data Engineering team at the heart of the Business Intelligence organisation, working alongside Data Scientists, Analysts and Product teams to build the platform the entire company relies upon.
This is a Staff-level position with genuine influence over technical direction, engineering standards and the evolution of the platform. You'll have the freedom to solve complex engineering challenges while helping shape how data is built and consumed across the business.
What They're Looking For:
✅ Significant commercial experience in Data Engineering or Software Engineering (typically 8+ years)
✅ Strong Python and SQL skills
✅ Experience building modern data platforms and distributed batch and streaming pipelines
✅ Strong experience with technologies such as Airflow, dbt, Redshift, Spark, Kafka and modern cloud infrastructure
✅ Deep understanding of DataOps, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, testing, monitoring and data quality
✅ Experience with Docker, Kubernetes and cloud-native architectures
✅ Demonstrated technical leadership through mentoring, setting standards and influencing engineering direction
✅ Excellent communication skills with the ability to work across engineering, analytics and business teams
