Research Software Engineer im Bereich Mobile Sensor Systems (all genders) (Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in)
About Fraunhofer IOSB
The Fraunhofer Society (www.fraunhofer.de) is a world leader in application-oriented research, with 75 institutes and 32,000 employees driving innovation in technology, science, administration, and IT. At the Fraunhofer Institute for Optronics, Systems Technology and Image Exploitation IOSB, we shape technologies for the future by researching, developing, and evaluating novel vision systems and optimizing the use and networking of sensors for data processing and analysis. Our work supports decision-making, process optimization, and the intelligent control of autonomous systems.
Object Recognition Department
Our Object Recognition (OBJ) department focuses on innovative methods for precise localization of technical sensor platforms in complex environments. We combine reference data (e.g., UAV and satellite imagery, 3D models) with onboard imaging sensors to develop robust, scalable, and practical localization solutions. Our projects range from fundamental research to prototype development in national and international R&D initiatives.
Your Role: Research Software Engineer
Join our team and contribute your software expertise to exciting Computer Vision projects! As a Research Software Engineer, you will bridge the gap between scientific research and professional software development, conceptualizing, developing, and evaluating research software for image-based localization of mobile sensor platforms.
Methodology & Algorithms
- Focus on Computer Vision and Machine Learning, particularly localization using reference data and onboard imaging.
- Emphasis on learning-based methods with modern frameworks (PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow), image-based 3D reconstruction, and modern rendering libraries.
Software Engineering & Integration
- Develop and operate software components in containerized environments (e.g., Docker) for reproducible experiments and cross-platform compatibility.
- Integrate developed methods into real sensor platforms and demonstrators.
- Deploy and optimize algorithms on edge platforms (e.g., NVIDIA Jetson) and real-time controllers (e.g., Pixhawk hardware, PX4 autopilot).
- Ensure code quality, reproducibility, and sustainable usability.
Collaboration & Application
- Collaborate with fellow researchers and external project partners.
- Contribute to system integration.
- Conduct demonstrations and field trials.
- Prepare project reports.
Your Profile
- Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- Excellent programming skills, especially in Python and/or C++.
- Foundational knowledge or practical experience in image processing or Computer Vision (e.g., image-based localization, registration, or 3D reconstruction).
- Ideally, knowledge or experience in containerization (e.g., Docker), robotics frameworks (e.g., ROS), edge platforms (e.g., NVIDIA Jetson), and autopilots/real-time controllers (e.g., Pixhawk hardware, PX4 autopilot).
- Very good German and good English language skills.
What We Offer
- Diverse work at the intersection of science and practice, focused on future technologies and societal applications.
- Freedom to innovate and contribute your own ideas.
- Excellent technical equipment and optimal working conditions.
- A motivated, interdisciplinary, and international team.
- Attractive work-life balance options (flexible hours, remote work arrangements).
- Individual career development opportunities (e.g., Fraunhofer TALENTA program).
- On-site amenities including free parking, EV charging, canteen, and nearby shops.
- Excellent public transport links and a subsidy for the Deutschlandticket.
Diversity & Inclusion
We value and promote diverse skills and welcome all applications regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnicity, religion, disability, or sexual orientation. We offer support for applicants with disabilities to ensure their skills are optimally utilized.
