Job Description

Autopsies have long been considered the gold standard for quality assurance in medicine. The COVID-19 pandemic has once again highlighted the importance of autopsies for understanding pathophysiology, therapies, and disease management, enabling the establishment of the National Autopsy Network (NATON, www.naton.network). NATON is a sustainable infrastructure for autopsy-based research within the German University Medicine Network (NUM). The goal is to provide a data and methods platform that promotes collaboration between pathology, neuropathology, and forensic medicine. The structure supports rapid feedback between research, patient care, and pandemic management.

In the NAREG data platform (National Autopsy Register), electronic autopsy data are collected nationwide, as well as from initial international centers, in an eCRF (electronic case report form). This significantly contributes to the understanding of fatal diseases. It offers a modular design and is scalable, making it suitable for all fatal use cases and thus usable for a broad spectrum of medical questions.

NAREG serves as the interface for research projects and is the central point of contact for analyses and data reporting to professional societies and institutions such as the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI). NATON has already supported numerous research projects, resulting in over 190 publications in renowned journals such as Cell or the New England Journal of Medicine. Furthermore, NATON is in continuous exchange with all autopsy-related professional societies, politicians, and public health decision-makers, leading to adjustments in legislative decisions and the initiation of new research approaches. It is considered the largest multi-center autopsy research project worldwide, with over 40 participating centers and more than 2500 autopsy data or over 65,000 pieces of information on post-mortem samples in the register.

NATON is a collaborative research project within the NUM, currently with four coordinators from Aachen (led by Prof. Boor), Hamburg, Berlin, and Augsburg. The NAREG register is managed under the scientific and medical leadership of Prof. Boor (Institute of Pathology) and the technical leadership of Prof. Röhrig (Institute of Medical Informatics) in Aachen.
